For those of who you have seen fairly expensive colored drinks appearing in the supermarket that your friends are calling healthy, they are most likely referring to kombucha. These drinks are growing quickly in popularity as more companies are beginning to capitalize on the success of them. According to the Washington Post kombucha is a fermented tea that is created by adding a culture of bacteria and yeast to a solution of tea, sugar and other flavorings. The fermentation process makes the beverage taste rather tart and result in a low percentage of alcohol.

I was hesitant to try kombucha because it is considered one of the many health fads that will soon be forgotten just like hot pants (For those of you curious to know what hot pants are they are pants which heat up while exercising, allowing people to sweat more and potentially lose weight... maybe). Kombucha is not just a fad because it has real value unlike most other health trends. Not only have beverage companies realized the success of this product but most recently the first ever kombucha brewery has been created and it will most likely not be the last. The reason I am now an avid drinker of kombucha is because it not only tastes delicious but because it promotes a healthy diet. It is low in calories at around 30-40 per serving and markets itself as a carbonated drink not only for the body but for the soul. I found this infographic through pinterest and I think it does a good job of summarizing all of the health benefits associated with kombucha:

Whether you are recovering from a surgery or just trying to maintain a healthy regime, I suggest sampling kombucha. I would HIGHLY recommend taking kombucha after surgery as many people are often put on antibiotics to help fight bacterial infections. While antibiotics are helping your body, they are at the same time damaging the beneficial bacteria in your body and therefore probiotics are needed to balance this out. Kombucha is FILLED with raw probiotics that not only help to aid in this process but are also known to enhance immune responses,  giving individuals a higher protection against getting sick.

Kombucha is a refined taste but I think everyone is bound to find a flavor that suits them.
